What is markup on WhatsApp messages?
Markup is any amount a WhatsApp provider adds on top of Meta’s published price for a message. Meta charges a fixed rate per delivered message, decided by the message category and the recipient’s country. If your provider charges more than that rate for the same message, the difference is markup, whether it is shown as a percentage, a per-message fee or a bundled price.
How do providers charge for WhatsApp messages?
There are three common models. In direct billing, Meta bills your own WhatsApp Business Account and the provider charges only for its software. In a prepaid balance, the provider holds a balance you top up and deducts Meta’s charges from it. In resale, the provider sets its own price per message, often as a percentage on top or as a bundle. Extra cost is easiest to hide in the last two, where the provider sits in the billing path.
| Model | Who bills the message | Where extra cost can appear | How to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct billing by Meta | Meta, to your own account | Only in the provider’s separate software fee | Compare Meta’s invoice with the provider’s invoice |
| Prepaid balance | The provider, from a balance you top up | Top-up card fees, currency conversion, or a rate above Meta’s | Compare each deduction with Meta’s rate |
| Provider’s own price per message | The provider | A percentage or fixed fee on every message | Divide the message charge by messages delivered |
How do I calculate the markup I am paying?
Divide the message charge on your invoice by the number of messages delivered in the same category and country, then compare the result with Meta’s published rate. If they match, you pay no markup. If yours is higher, the gap divided by Meta’s rate is your markup percentage.
Download a month of message usage from your provider, showing delivered messages by category and country.
Find the matching rate on Meta’s rate card for your billing currency.
Multiply the delivered messages by Meta’s rate to get what Meta would have charged.
Compare that with what you were billed for the same messages.
Add anything charged around the messages: top-up card fees, currency conversion, minimum top-ups.
Markup percentage = (amount billed minus Meta’s charge) divided by Meta’s charge.
A worked example, at Meta’s published Brazil rate of 0.68 US cents for a service message. This is conditional arithmetic, not a claim about any provider: if a provider adds a percentage, this is what the percentage costs at that volume.
| Line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Meta’s charge for 20,000 delivered service messages | $136.00 |
| With a 15% markup added | $156.40 |
| The extra you pay each month | $20.40 |
| The extra you pay each year | $244.80 |
Why does markup matter more from 1 October 2026?
Because more of your messages become billable. Service replies and in-window utility templates were free, so a percentage added to Meta’s rate had nothing to apply to. From 1 October they carry a charge, and any percentage a provider adds to Meta’s rate now applies to them too. A support team that sent thousands of free replies now has thousands of billable ones to mark up.
What else can add to the cost besides markup?
Three things: card processing fees on balance top-ups, currency conversion when your billing currency differs from the provider’s, and minimum top-up amounts that tie up cash. None of these is markup on the message itself, but each raises what you effectively pay per message, so include them when you calculate.
What should I ask a WhatsApp provider about pricing?
Six questions settle it. Ask them before you sign, and ask again at every renewal.
Who bills the WhatsApp messages, Meta or you?
Do you add any percentage or fee to Meta’s message rates?
Is there a card fee or a currency conversion charge when I top up?
Can I see each message charge on Meta’s own invoice?
What is the platform fee, and what does it include?
Do I keep ownership of my WhatsApp Business Account and number?
Does Omni Chat Stack add a markup on WhatsApp messages?
No. Meta bills your own WhatsApp Business Account directly at its published rate, so your message charges never pass through us, and Omni Chat Stack adds 0% on every plan at any volume. We earn only the flat per-agent platform fee, and you can check any message charge against Meta’s own invoice.
How can I keep WhatsApp costs down with any provider?
Put more into each reply, keep simple one-to-one chats in the WhatsApp Business App with Coexistence, use Click-to-WhatsApp ads for the free 72-hour entry point window, and count your service messages against the 1,000 free on each number. None of these depends on which provider you use.
